A few years ago the concept of “greening” your business was getting a lot of buzz. Reduce, reuse recycle, GreenIT, and offsetting your carbon footprint were topics everyone was talking about. Unfortunately, with the recent recession, many SMBs have understandably become focused on protecting their bottom line and have back-burnered their green initiatives.
Fortunately there are a number of apps available that can help organizations easily reengage their green movement and begin to benefit of saving money while reducing the impact on the environment. In our Mobile Apps Series TechRecs, we feature the apps that we believe would be most beneficial to you in running your business. This month we are featuring three of our favorite green apps for business; Green Outlet, PaperKarma, and My Planet.
Green Outlet
Want to cut down on your office’s power bill? Green Outlet can help. This app helps you identify the equipment that uses the most energy, predicts what your electric bill will be and measures your carbon footprint. To get started, you find the types of equipment you use and approximate how many hours per day they are in use. If you exceed the U.S. Government’s recommended carbon limits, the app will warn you and give you the option to purchase carbon offsets.
PaperKarma
While many businesses stopped using direct mail for marketing, mailboxes still seem to fill up with annoying junk mail. Using PaperKarma’s app, take a photo of the junk mail the app scans a database, locates the mailer and requests the sender to remove you from its distribution list.
My Planet
The concept of a carbon footprint might be a little abstract for some people. With My Planet you can see how the day to day choices you make impacts the planet. Using a game-like interface, My Planet is a fun way to help you measure your carbon footprint. It offers tips to make improvements and awards badges for “greening” your daily habits.
