There are all sorts of tried-and-true SEO tactics that can be used to ensure your site is successfully crawled, indexed, and positioned in the major search engines. Though SEO tactics evolve with the technologies used to render Web sites, certain fundamentals remain constant.
While there are many different options out there to drive more traffic to your website, the first and most important thing you should do is to make sure that your website is built with the fundamental components for success.
Part 4: Good Page Titles & Meta Tags
When constructing a website, each page of the site is given a page title. This title should be unique from the other pages on the site, and it should accurately reflect the purpose of the page. This is critical because the page title often shows up in search engine results, and gave give a potential visitor the last bit of information they need to determine if your site is the one they are looking for.
Title Tag
Use 5-10 words to write a keyword-rich title that’s relevant to the page. Begin with keywords, using sentence case. It’s important because most engines use the copy as the link to your page in search results.
Description Tag
Very important because it’s often used by search engines as your site description in search results. Use 15-20 words, starting with several strategic keywords (170 characters). Make it compelling and relevant to receive qualified traffic.
Meta Keywords Tag
List your strategic keyword phrases up to a maximum of 744 characters. Use keywords that are relevant to the page, with or without commas, and include phrases that will be used in search engine queries.
