Simply having a daily backup on tape leaves too much at risk. Tape backups are, simply put, not reliable. Every company should perform off-site data backup and storage. With tape backup, companies need to store the tapes in an offsite location that is secure and accessible, while disk systems need to have an off-site replication if the backup is not run off-site initially. Every company should back up its data at least once daily. Here are the basics the bare essentials your company should implement to properly backup its data:
1) Perform data restoration tests. The backup software and the hardware on which data resides need to be checked daily to verify that backup is completed successfully. Companies need to perform monthly test restoration to validate that a restoration can be accomplished during a disaster.
2) Be redundant. Establishing redundant servers for all critical data and providing an alternate way to access that data can bring disaster recovery time down to minutes rather than days.
3) Consider hiring a managed services provider. For small- to mid-sized organizations, it is often cost prohibitive to implement a sound disaster recovery plan. Managed services providers have the technical personnel to design, implement and manage complex disaster recovery projects.
4) Continuous backup. Consider more frequent backup or “continuous data protection” depending on the type of business and the application.
5) Implement a remote provider. Work with a remote data protection provider who has the power and connection redundancy, storage and network infrastructure in place to manage a true disaster recovery plan.
You might think you’re being safe, but web threats, employee behavior, data protection and now the “Cloud” present daunting challenges for any business. Currently, the most prevalent threat to corporate security is lack of understanding the complexity of security and compliance issues, how to identify vulnerabilities and how to implement effective security policies and tools that can be managed.
