Wearable technology has been the big buzz since the introduction Google Glass and Samsungs’s SmartWatch. Toronto-based tech company, InterXon plans to join in on the fun with the introduction of the Muse headband. Touted as a headband that allows you to control games, reduce stress, and improve your memory and concentration, the Muse translates brainwaves into instructions via Bluetooth to interact with content on your smart devices.
Acting like a portable Electroencephalograph, the headband picks up brain signals via the electrical pings of firing neurons, and uses algorithms to determine pattern shifts indicating stress, focus, and relaxation. Muse transmits this data to a smartphone app that visually depicts the the state of the brain, allowing users to observe their brainwave patterns and ostensibly to perform simple mind-controlled activities, with more functionality said to be in development.
To demonstrate how InteraXon has harnessed the power of brainwaves they have staged a number of events including turning on the lights at Niagara Falls, the CN Tower and Canada’s Parliament building using the brain power of visitors at the Vancouver Olympics, and, more to my taste, a thought-controlled beer tap. For now, since the product is still in the early stages of general release, InteraXon is concentrating on “brain health” with the device. Users can monitor when they are more alert, and how long they are able to effectively concentrate in order to coordinate periods for productivity and breaks when accomplishing tasks.
Available early next year, InteraXon is accepting reservations for the Muse headband for $199 USD on their website.
