As organizations strive to support an increasingly virtual workforce, mobile devices continue to take center stage. These days, employees expect to be able to work from anywhere by leveraging smart devices to access applications and communications. The number of mobile subscribers worldwide is predicted to rise to 6.8 billion by 2018. Knowing that 60% of mobile device users download up to five new apps per month, app developers are continually designing new and improved applications to assist users with everything from losing weight, getting pregnant, and running your business more efficiently. In our Mobile Apps Series TechRecs, we feature the apps that we believe would be most beneficial to you in running your business. This month we will cover AirSleep, Maaii, and Power Presenter for iPad.
AirSleep
Everyone who has had to travel for business is familiar with the often futile struggle to catch some sleep en route. It seems like the drone of the plane engines just gets louder the more desperate you become. AirSleep is a free sleep application that offers a wide variety of audio programs to tune out cabin and engine noise and lull your brain into a deep state of relaxation or sleep. The recordings can be adjusted to play for different intervals to accommodate travel time. Boasting “intuitive” brainwave technology, the AirSleep app will help even the busiest business traveler feel relaxed, refreshed, and sharp for their meetings. AirSleep is free in the iTunes store.
Maaii
Maaii is a mobile messaging app that blends the telephony focus of programs like Skype with the social approach of chat apps like WhatsApp. With Maaii, users can make regular calls to anywhere in the world directly from the app. As with Skype, users purchase calling credit or you can earn credits by performing functions such as rating the app or inviting friends to join. For instance, users can earn approximately $0.30 in credits just by filling our their user profile. While this may not seem like much of a credit, a call to the UK with the app costs just $0.08. Planned enhancements for the app promise to allow users to personalize and customize their calling experience much more that can typically be done on a regular phone.
Power Presenter for iPad
Power Presenter for iPad lets you display a presentation that’s been converted to a PDF file. The PDF file can be opened in one of two ways; it can be uploaded it via the file sharing function in iTunes or from an email by holding down the attachment icon. Once the file is uploaded, you can present it via a projector, annotate or mark on presentation slides using the pen, and when the presentation is over, email the marked-up slides to your audience. The app also has a whiteboard feature and provides web access to the web with a single tap. Power Presenter is $1.99 in the iTunes store.
