Since the introduction of version 8, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer joined the ranks of Firefox and Chrome with a handy arsenal of third-party add-ons and extensions. Many of these extensions increase the browser’s functionality while saving you precious time surfing the web. Here are a few of our favorites:
If you are like many of us, you have become pretty dependant on MS Office’s spell check. Speckie is a spell check for any IE window including forms, social networking sites, and web mail. Misspelled words have the standard squiggly line found in Word and you can right click on the work for suggested fixes.
Enterra Download Manager
Do you do a lot of downloading from the web? Enterra Download Manager creates a toolbar that you can drag-and-drop links to to start the download process. If there is a glitch in the download, the extension will stop the download and start it again later.
Super Ad Blocker
As the name of this extension implies, Super Ad Blocker allows you to disable annoying ads that are so pervasive on the internet. You can enable or disable the feature at anytime with an on/off button in your toolbar. It isn’t 100% effective on every web page but it generally does a great job. You can give it a try for free for 15 days before purchasing for $29.95.
Cocoon for Internet Explorer
Cocoon allows you to browse the web anonymously while protecting you against privacy threats and malware. Acting as a proxy, Cocoon stores your browsing history and cookies in the cloud rather than locally on your computer. Cocoon for Internet Explorer offers a free version but you will have to live with advertisements. The paid version, sans ads costs $4.99 per month or $29 per year.
