With more than 2,000 apps being released everyday, how can you possibly scroll through them all to sort the gimmicks from the apps that will actually help you run your business more effectively? Our monthly Mobile App Series reviews our picks for apps that will help you gain more efficiency from your mobile device. This month we will cover Bump, iTeleport, and Cashbook.
Check out our past posts on the following apps: Lookout, Evernote & Dropbox, Salesforce, Lyris HQ and LinkedIn, Encamp, Google Analytics, GoToMeeting, RDP Lite, Mighty Meeting, Intuit GoPayment, and Springpad, Scan2PDF and Documents to Go.
Bump
At every networking event, the business card exchange is de rigeur. Keeping track of contact information for follow up can be a challenge if you are like many of us and schedule several out of office meetings and events consecutively to conserve time. Bump allows you to eliminate the juggling of cards and swap contact info, calendar, pictures, even your social media profiles with others, simply by bumping your phone into theirs. The info is transferred wirelessly and automatically added to your contact list. The app on your phone uses the phone’s sensors to literally “feel” the bump, and it sends that info up to the cloud. The matching algorithm listens to the bumps from phones around the world and pairs up phones that felt the same bump. For the app to work, you need a good WiFi or cell connection to the internet and a current data plan. Bump is free and is available for iPhones and Androids and it even works cross-platform between them.
iTeleport
iTeleport allows you to “teleport” yourself to your PC or Mac from anywhere in the world. The apps’ interface allows you full control of your computer’s mouse and keyboard and provides a display of your computer screens without any screen resolution limit. You can check on your webcam, edit images on your PC, email a file, or transform your iPhone or iPad into a remote control for your media. Giving a presentation at a location with no internet connection? iTeleport will give you full access to control your laptop. Used on the iPhone 4s, the app supports speech recognition for dictation to your remote pc. With over 15 multi-touch gestures, iTeleport makes navigating your desktop a breeze.
Cashbook
If you are part of a mobile team, you know what a chore tracking expenses and mileage can be. Cashbook allows you to track income, expenses, and mileage using real-time GPS tracking. The app can be customized to track for multiple accounts, with editable income and expense categories and can even track up to 36 different currencies. You can export reports in CSV, QIF, or HTML format or simply send your reports to DropBox or Google Docs for download at the office. You can take shapshots of receipts, calculate and track tips, and backup your database to an SD card for safekeeping. For only $5.99, the Cashbook app has been called “the Swiss Army knife” of Android finance apps.
